counter-word

How many pages is 1,000 words?

Four pages double-spaced. Two pages single-spaced. Both assume 12pt Times New Roman with one-inch margins — change any of those and the answer moves.

1,000 words is 4 pages double-spaced and 2 pages single-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman with one-inch margins. At 1.5 line spacing it comes to about 3 pages.

If you only needed the number, that is it. The rest of this page covers what changes it, which matters if your brief specifies a different font, or you are close to a page limit.

Garamond 121.92.83.7
Verdana 122.43.74.9
Courier New 122.94.35.7

Courier New needs nearly half again as many pages as Garamond for identical text, because Courier is monospaced — every letter occupies the width of a capital W. This is exactly why some submission guidelines specify Courier: it makes length obvious and prevents anyone squeezing extra words onto a page.

What eats into your page count

The figures above assume a page of unbroken prose, which no real document is.

  • The title block. A title, name, course and date can consume a quarter of page one.
  • Headings. Each costs roughly a line and a half once space above and below is counted.
  • Paragraph spacing. A blank line between paragraphs adds up fast over twenty paragraphs.
  • Block quotes. Indented and often single-spaced, so they behave differently from body text.
  • Figures and tables. Measure them; they rarely land where you expect after a reflow.

Common lengths are tabulated in the word count reference, and the rest of the counting explainers are collected in guides.

Why is A4 not listed separately?

A4 is 297mm tall and 210mm wide; US Letter is 279mm by 216mm. A4 is taller and narrower, so it fits slightly more lines of slightly fewer words. The two effects largely cancel, leaving a difference under three per cent — well inside the error margin of any page estimate.

Common questions

It is a standard short essay or a substantial blog post: about four minutes of reading and seven minutes of speaking. For a dissertation chapter it is short; for a news article it is long.
