Terms of use
Plain terms for a free set of tools. Using the site means accepting them.
Last updated: 22 August 2026 · Operated by: the operator of counter-word, contactable at contact@counter-word.com.
Using the tools
Everything on this site is free to use, for personal and commercial purposes alike. You may use the results — word counts, character counts, readability scores, page and time estimates — for any lawful purpose, without crediting us and without asking permission.
There is no account, no fee, no usage limit and no registration. We may change, add or withdraw any tool at any time.
Your content
You keep every right in anything you type or paste. Because that text is processed in your browser and never transmitted to us, we never receive it, never hold a copy, and acquire no rights in it whatsoever. There is no licence for you to grant us, because there is nothing for us to licence.
Accuracy, and its limits
The tools are provided as they are, without warranty of any kind.
Word and character counts are exact arithmetic. Everything else is an estimate or a reference figure. Sentence counts depend on punctuation conventions that genuinely vary. Syllable counts rest on pronunciation that cannot be derived from spelling with certainty. Readability scores use published formulas that measure only sentence and word length, and cannot judge whether writing is any good. Page counts assume particular fonts and margins. Platform character limits reflect documentation that the platforms change without notice.
Where a count carries real consequences — an academic submission, a legal filing, a contractual deliverable, an advertising field — check it against the system that will actually enforce the limit. That system, not this one, is the one that decides.
Liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of this site or from reliance on any figure it produces. That includes lost marks, missed deadlines, rejected submissions, lost profits, lost business and loss of data.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, these terms do not affect your statutory rights.
Availability
We aim to keep the site up and working, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free service, and we are not liable for downtime, maintenance, or events outside our control.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use the site in breach of any applicable law
- attempt to disrupt, overload or gain unauthorised access to the site or its infrastructure
- circumvent, remove or interfere with any technical measure or attribution
- scrape or systematically download the site at a rate that degrades it for other people
- present the site as your own, or the results as endorsed by us
The embeddable widget
If you place our widget on your own website, these additional terms apply.
- The attribution line that the snippet places in your page, crediting counter-word with a link, must remain visible and functional. It is the entire price of the widget.
- You may not alter the widget's appearance or behaviour so as to hide, obscure or disable that line.
- The licence is non-exclusive and revocable, granted for as long as you comply with these terms.
- We may change the widget's appearance or add parameters. Parameters already documented will keep behaving as documented.
- We give no guarantee of continued availability, so do not build anything critical on it.
Intellectual property
The design, written content, code and structure of this site belong to the operator of counter-word unless stated otherwise. The fonts are used under their respective open source licences. You are welcome to quote from these pages with attribution and to link to them freely; please do not republish substantial parts of the written content as your own.
Governing law
These terms, and any dispute arising out of them, are governed by the law of the country in which counter-word is established, and the courts of that country have exclusive jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident in another country, you keep the benefit of any protections that your own country's law makes mandatory.
Changes
We may update these terms. The version published on this page is the one in force, and the date at the top shows when it last changed.

Common questions
Can I use the results commercially?
Yes. Counts, scores and estimates from this site can be used for any lawful purpose, commercial or otherwise, with no attribution required.
Do you claim any rights over what I type?
None. Your text never reaches us, so there is nothing for us to claim rights over.
Can I remove the attribution from the embedded widget?
Not from the hosted widget — that link is what keeps the tool free. If you need an unbranded version for an internal product, write to contact@counter-word.com and we can discuss it.
